I think his problem was booze. Let me relate a story told to me by Randy Amasia
at the Game Show Convention about three years ago.

In the waning days of the daytime version (about 1978), Matt Ottinger, David
Zinkin, and Randy were attending a taping at Television City. Gene invited them
to stay after the show. After taping, Gene brought out about three bottles of
tequila, which he shared with Matt, David, and Randy. Gene guzzled about half a
bottle, and then passed out because he was so drunk.

Matt and Randy thought this would be a good time to have a gay orgy, so they
proceeded to take off their clothes and butt-fuck one another. David was
reluctant, but he finally stripped and got in on the fun. Everyone was queering
everyone else. (The production staff was gone, so no one was the wiser.) Randy
